When to Use This Tool

Use this when:
  • You took a photo with your phone sideways and need to rotate it 90° to view it correctly
  • You have images that were scanned or captured upside down and need to rotate 180°
  • You want to flip an image horizontally to create a mirror effect or correct orientation
  • You need to flip an image vertically to adjust the orientation
  • You're preparing images for a presentation and need to standardize their orientation
  • You have photos from different cameras with mixed orientations and want to align them
  • You want to create artistic effects by rotating or flipping images
Don't use this if:
  • You need to rotate/flip images larger than 50MB (browser memory limits may cause crashes)
  • You want to preserve animated GIFs (rotation/flipping converts them to static images)
  • You require batch processing of 50+ images simultaneously (use desktop software)
  • You need precise rotation angles other than 90°, 180°, or 270° (use image editing software)
  • You want to rotate/flip only part of an image (use image editing software with selection tools)

What is an Image Rotate & Flip Tool?

An image rotate and flip tool adjusts image orientation by rotating (90°, 180°, 270°, or custom angles) and flipping (horizontal mirror or vertical mirror). Our tool processes all transformations in your browser — no server involvement.

Image rotation and flipping is necessary for correcting photos taken in the wrong orientation, creating mirror images for design compositions, adjusting scanned documents and images, preparing images for specific layout requirements, and fixing orientation metadata issues that cause images to display sideways.

This tool is particularly useful for photographers correcting image orientation, graphic designers creating mirrored compositions, document managers fixing scanned pages, social media managers adjusting image orientation for posts, and e-commerce sellers correcting product photo orientation.

Compared to phone/tablet built-in editors (limited to 90° steps, no custom angles), full image editors like Photoshop or GIMP (overkill for simple rotation), or online tools that upload your images, PureXio provides quick rotation and flipping with support for custom angles and instant preview.

The tool offers 90° clockwise and counterclockwise rotation, 180° rotation, horizontal flip (mirror), vertical flip, and custom angle rotation with a visual angle selector. All transformations maintain the original image quality and can be combined (e.g., rotate 90° then flip horizontally). The tool shows a real-time preview of the result before downloading.

Best for: rotating images by 90°/180°/270° or custom angles and flipping horizontally/vertically. Quality preservation, real-time preview. Fully private.

How to Rotate or Flip Images

1

Drop your image file or click to browse and select your file. The tool will display your image

2

Select rotation (90°, 180°, 270°) or flip (horizontal, vertical). You can apply multiple operations—each operation works on the previously processed image

3

Preview the result and download your rotated or flipped image. Original image dimensions may change with rotation (90°/270° swap width and height)

Common Use Cases

Rotate a landscape photo taken in portrait orientation (90° rotation) to view it correctly

Fix a photo that was scanned upside down (180° rotation) to restore proper orientation

Flip a selfie horizontally to create a mirror-image effect

Rotate product images to standardize orientation for e-commerce listings

Flip images vertically to correct orientation for presentations or documents

Apply multiple rotations (90° + 90° = 180°) to achieve desired orientation

Create artistic effects by combining rotation and flipping operations

Features

Rotate images by 90°, 180°, or 270 degrees clockwise
Flip images horizontally (left-right mirror) or vertically (top-bottom mirror)
Apply multiple operations in sequence (rotate then flip, or vice versa)
Real-time preview shows exactly how the image will look
Preserves image quality—rotation/flipping doesn't degrade image
Works with JPG, PNG, WebP, and GIF formats
100% private—all processing happens in your browser

Limitations & Constraints

Maximum file size: 50MB per image (browser memory limit). For larger files, use desktop software.

Animated GIFs: Rotating/flipping animated GIFs converts them to static images—animation is lost.

Rotation angles: Only supports 90°, 180°, and 270° rotations—not arbitrary angles.

Very large images (5000+ pixels) may process slowly. Consider resizing first for faster processing.

Batch processing: Process one image at a time. For multiple images, rotate/flip them individually or use desktop software.

Troubleshooting

Image doesn't load or rotation/flip fails

Solution: Ensure the image file is valid and not corrupted. Try opening the image in an image viewer first. Check that the file format is supported (JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF). If rotation/flip fails, try a different browser or use a different image file. Prevention: Use standard image formats. Avoid corrupted or unusual image variants.

Rotated image dimensions are wrong (width and height swapped)

Solution: This is expected behavior—rotating 90° or 270° swaps width and height dimensions. For example, a 1920×1080 image becomes 1080×1920 after 90° rotation. This is normal and correct. If you need specific dimensions after rotation, use our Image Resize tool after rotating. Prevention: Expect dimension changes with 90°/270° rotations.

Image appears blurry after rotation or flip

Solution: Rotation/flipping itself doesn't reduce quality—it transforms the image. If the image appears blurry, the original may have been low resolution. Ensure you're rotating/flipping from a high-quality original image. The tool preserves original image quality. Prevention: Use high-resolution source images. Avoid rotating/flipping from very small images.

Browser crashes when rotating/flipping large images

Solution: Close other browser tabs and applications to free up memory. Try a different browser (Chrome handles large files better than Firefox). Resize very large images first using our Image Resize tool, then rotate/flip. If crashes persist, use desktop software for images over 20MB. Prevention: Keep images under 20MB. Resize very large images before rotating/flipping.

Multiple operations don't work as expected

Solution: Each operation (rotate or flip) works on the previously processed image. For example, rotating 90° then flipping horizontally applies both transformations in sequence. If results aren't as expected, try applying operations in a different order, or reset and start over. Prevention: Apply one operation at a time and preview results before applying the next.
