When to Use This Tool

Use this when:
  • You have PNG images with transparency and need to convert to JPG for websites that don't support transparency
  • You want to convert JPG photos to WebP format for better compression and faster website loading
  • You need to convert images to a specific format required by an application or platform
  • You're optimizing images for web use and want to convert to WebP for smaller file sizes
  • You have images in one format but need them in another for compatibility (e.g., PNG to JPG for email)
  • You want to convert GIF animations to static PNG or JPG for use in documents
  • You're preparing images for social media and need specific formats (JPG for Instagram, PNG for logos)
Don't use this if:
  • You need to convert images larger than 50MB each (browser memory limits may cause crashes)
  • You want to preserve animated GIFs (conversion to PNG/JPG/WebP loses animation)
  • You require batch processing of 50+ images simultaneously (use desktop software)
  • You need to resize or adjust images before conversion (use Image Resize tool first)
  • You want to add text, annotations, or edit images before conversion (use image editing software first)

What is an Image Format Converter?

An image format converter transforms images between different file formats — JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, and more. Our browser-based converter processes all conversions locally on your device without uploading files to any server.

Image format conversion is essential when you need to convert PNG screenshots to JPEG for smaller file sizes, transform images to WebP for modern web performance, convert HEIC photos from iPhones to universally compatible JPEG, or prepare images in specific formats required by different platforms and applications.

This tool is particularly valuable for web developers converting images to WebP format (which provides 25–35% smaller files than JPEG at equivalent quality), designers preparing assets in multiple formats for different deliverables, photographers converting between RAW-adjacent formats, and anyone receiving images in formats their software doesn't support.

Compared to desktop tools like Photoshop or IrfanView (which require installation) or online converters that upload files to cloud servers, PureXio's converter handles the transformation instantly in your browser. It supports batch conversion, quality adjustment for lossy formats, and preserves image metadata where applicable.

The tool clearly shows the file size difference between input and output formats, helping you make informed decisions about which format best suits your needs.

Best for: converting between JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, and more. WebP saves 25–35% over JPEG. Batch conversion. Zero server involvement.

How to Convert Image Format

1

Drop your image file (JPG, PNG, or WebP) or click to browse and select your file

2

Select target format (JPG, PNG, or WebP). The tool auto-selects a different format when you upload

3

Click 'Convert' and download your converted image. Format conversion preserves visual content but may change file size and features (transparency, animation)

Common Use Cases

Convert PNG logo with transparency to JPG for email attachments (transparency becomes white background)

Convert JPG photos to WebP format for website optimization (smaller file sizes, faster loading)

Convert PNG screenshots to JPG for smaller file sizes when transparency isn't needed

Convert JPG images to PNG for preserving quality in design work or when transparency is needed later

Convert WebP images to JPG or PNG for compatibility with older software or platforms

Convert PNG images to WebP for modern websites (better compression than PNG or JPG)

Convert images to required format for specific applications (e.g., profile pictures, document images)

Features

Convert between JPG, PNG, and WebP formats instantly
Auto-selects different format when you upload (PNG → JPG, JPG → PNG)
Preserves image quality during conversion
PNG to JPG: Transparency converted to white background
JPG to PNG: Lossless conversion maintains quality
WebP support: Modern format with excellent compression

Limitations & Constraints

Maximum file size: 50MB per image (browser memory limit). For larger files, use desktop software.

PNG to JPG conversion: Transparency is lost and converted to white background—cannot preserve transparency.

Animated GIFs: Converting animated GIFs to PNG/JPG/WebP loses animation—only first frame converts.

Format-specific features: Some features (like PNG transparency, JPG quality settings) may be lost during conversion.

Batch processing: Process one image at a time. For multiple images, convert them individually or use desktop software.

Troubleshooting

Image conversion fails or shows error

Solution: Ensure the image file is valid and not corrupted. Try opening the image in an image viewer first. Check that the file format is supported (JPG, PNG, WebP). If conversion fails, try a different browser or convert the image using desktop software. Prevention: Use standard image formats. Avoid corrupted or unusual image variants.

Converted image has white background instead of transparency (PNG to JPG)

Solution: This is expected behavior—JPG format doesn't support transparency. When converting PNG with transparency to JPG, transparent areas become white. To preserve transparency, keep the image as PNG or use a format that supports transparency (PNG, WebP). If you need transparency in JPG, use image editing software to add a colored background first. Prevention: Use PNG or WebP if transparency is required.

Converted image file size is much larger or smaller

Solution: File size changes are normal during format conversion. JPG uses lossy compression (smaller files), PNG uses lossless compression (larger files), WebP uses modern compression (varies). PNG to JPG typically reduces size, JPG to PNG typically increases size. WebP usually provides best compression. File size depends on image content, resolution, and format compression method. Prevention: Expect file size changes—this is normal for format conversion.

Browser crashes when converting large images

Solution: Close other browser tabs and applications to free up memory. Try a different browser (Chrome handles large files better than Firefox). Resize very large images first using our Image Resize tool, then convert. If crashes persist, use desktop software for images over 20MB. Prevention: Keep images under 20MB. Resize very large images before conversion.

Converted image quality looks worse than original

Solution: JPG uses lossy compression which can reduce quality, especially at high compression. PNG to JPG conversion may show quality loss. For best quality, use PNG format or convert to PNG (lossless). If converting to JPG, the quality is typically good for photos but may show artifacts for text or graphics. Prevention: Use PNG for graphics/text, JPG for photos. Test conversion quality before batch processing.
